Dear fellow students,

This is my first quarter here at Western as a junior and as a transfer student. I came here with the intentions of majoring in Psychology, mainly because it does interest me but also because I felt that my time for picking a major was soon running out. With that said, I've taken all psychology classes this quarter and have liked them for the most part but I have been considering other options as well. Looking at the classes involved for a BA in Sociology, I've felt really pulled towards the Sociology major too. I'm interested in criminology and family studies. I have no career in mind. I'm terribly indecisive and tend to stress myself out about decisions where I have many options that all sound seemingly worth my while. I'm a social sciences/humanities nerd so to speak.

I would greatly appreciate some feedback from people who are majoring in these areas, has experience with some of the classes and professors, or is in the same boat as me. We can jump out and swim in the ocean of indecisiveness together.

Thanks!

double major

I am a psych major and I LOVE IT. the professors are really awesome and you can tell really care about their students and the classes have all been really interesting...even the required stats classes that most people dread before they take them have turned out to be valuable and fun (to the degree that stats can be fun) : ). With that said, I haven't taken any soc. classes so I can't say anything about those. If you really like both of the programs, you should consider a double major. I am double majoring in psych and poli sci and i am only going to have to go a quarter beyond my original graduation date so it isn't that hard. By doing this, you probably wont be able to take a lot of the optional courses in the different programs if graduating in a somewhat timely fashion is a top priority of yours but other than that I would highly recommend double majoring...not only will you get to take all the classes you want, but you will have double the career opportunities when you do graduate which in the current economic climate is a good thing.

good luck with whatever you choose!

Very cool.  Psychology is

Very cool.  Psychology is indeed very fascinating.  I have taken sociology and it was very cool and interesting but not where I wanted to focus.  I definately think that if you picked sociology or psychology, either are awesome subjects or you could combine the two into a sweet double-major, very popular option.  I am actually at the present time double majoring in Psychology and English Literature.  This is my first quarter as well so I am playing in the pool as well.  The professors have been informative, fun and helpful so far for me.

Thanks for your responses!

Thanks for your responses! While I would love to do a double major, I think I am too late in the game to do that being that I'm in my third year. I wasn't really thinking about a double major in community college-more so just getting an associate degree. I should have though. The thing that makes this decision so hard is that they are similar majors with some obvious differences, but indeed similar. I've done a lot of research on both and have weighed pros and cons-but still am torn. Dang pressure!
